Pre-Holiday Cleanup Checklist

Ready or not, the holiday season is already here. Just a few short days ago we celebrated Thanksgiving, and Christmas and New Years are just around the corner. This is the season when family and friends come together to celebrate, give thanks, and enjoy the love we have for one another.

Of course it’s also the time when your mother-in-law has the chance to thoroughly evaluate your housekeeping and cooking skills. It’s the time when your parents have the opportunity to judge whether or not you really are an adult. If you want to impress, you’ve got to make sure your home is looking as fabulous as possible.

Pre-Cleanup for the Holidays

Everyone knows what a massive amount of work it takes to clean up your home after the holidays are finally over. But what about before then? How do you make sure your house sparkles and is an inviting, beautiful place that shows off your maturity and housekeeping skills?

  • Separate- Home cleaning, especially on your own, can be overwhelming, so focus only on the areas where you know guests are going to be. This includes the living room, dining room, bathroom, and kitchen. If your mother-in-law insists that’s she wouldn’t be comfortable in a hotel room, the guest room should be clean as well. As for the rest of the home? Close the doors. This separates the spaces and lets everyone know where they can and cannot enter.
  • Focus- Focus on one room at a time. If you only have time to clean one room a day, that’s fine; just don’t try to do everything at once. That can be overwhelming to even the most organized of people.
  • De-Clutter- Open up your space by getting rid of some of the clutter that you don’t need. This is especially important around the holidays when you need all the space available for friends and family. Put those in-the-way items in the closet, give them away, or place them in storage until the holiday is over.
  • Reward Yourself- As you clean each room, take a little time and reward yourself by putting up holiday decorations. You’ll feel an immediate sense of pride for your efforts.
