Spring Cleaning Your Bedroom 2014

Spring cleaning lists have the tendency to grow into monstrous projects that never get completed. We have found that it is much more effective to split your spring cleaning up into rooms and take on one room per day. Today we are going to talk about spring cleaning an adult’s bedroom (we will be talking about cleaning the kid’s room later on).

Cleaning an Adult’s Bedroom

The Closet: There are a couple of different areas of the closet that need to be decluttered and cleaned.

  • Clothes –  Going through your clothes and just throwing away everything you don’t like today is not a smart plan. The best way to make sure you’re only getting rid of clothes that you honestly never wear is by hanging all of your hanger backward in the closet. Meaning instead of the back of the hook facing you, the front of it should. As you wear your clothes, turn the hanger around to face in the right direction. After a few months, or maybe even a year, you will know which clothes you can send to the second hand shops without and ounce of regret. Clothes that you know for a fact that you never wear, you can should get rid of before starting this process to free up more space.
  • Shoes – Get rid of any shoes that: don’t fit, are severely worn, you never wear.
  • Random – Closets are always used to store random stuff that you don’t want around the house. If there are things in your closet that you haven’t used in the past year, it’s time to part ways.

The Bed: The bed actually includes many things that require upkeep. Don’t let it get by your spring cleaning untouched.

  • Mattress – Considering the fact that most of the time we spend in our bedrooms is on our beds, this is a very important area to clean. To remove odors from your mattress, sprinkle baking soda over the entire bed and let it sit for at least 30 minutes. Vacuum up the baking soda and you will be free of dirt and unpleasant smells.
  • Sheets – Wash your sheets on hot to kill any dust mites or bacteria. Add ½ – 1 cup of vinegar to the wash to kill odors and leave your sheets soft.
  • Pillows – Most stains on pillows are a result of sweat. Ew! To wash your pillows fill the washer with 1/3 of the way full with HOT water, 1C of laundry detergent, 1C powdered dish deterget, 1C bleach and 1/2C of Borax. Once the solution is dissolved add the pillows to the wash and fill the washer the rest of the way. Wash two pillows at a time and set the washer to 2nd rinse to run it twice. Put the pillows in the dryer with a couple of tennis balls wrapped in socks to help them fluff. For down and feather use the air cycle, for synthetics use the low heat setting.

All Dusty Things: The rest of your bedroom cleaning will consist of sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, polishing or wiping. So we are putting that into one category.

  • Baseboards: Don’t forget these! The perimeter of your room is going to be lined with dust unless you clean the baseboards. Warm soapy water, a sponge and a rag will have these looking as good as new in no time.
  • Fans: Make sure you dust your fan or your air vents to to get rid of that caked on gunk!
  • Windows: spray your windows with your cleaning solution, wipe with a lint free towel and then finish drying them with a crumpled newspaper. This will add shine and will not leave streaks!
